From the moment you separate or you start planning to move on from your partner, it is imperative that your document everything! Even if you keep a diary of events, conversations, settlement discussions and take it to a JP once a month and have it signed and dated then you have something to refer back to with a factual timeline if needed in the future.
When you separate you and your partner have 2 years to apply to the Family Court to reach a settlement if you can not come to an mutual arrangement beforehand.
So many people, myself included have been bullied through the court system by manipulated evidence therefore, documenting everything is of utmost importance. I found it soul destroying when the police and other authorities failed to help me but eventually I was able to rise above all else and keep fighting. To be honest, the process almost broke me and I am fortunate to have a supportive partner and loving children.
